Day 2

Breakfast included at hotel. Meet your local guide for a tour of the Newport Area to include tours of The Marble House and Elms Mansions. Marble House ~ was built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt.  It was a summer house, or "cottage", as Newporters called them in remembrance of the modest houses of the early 19th century. But Marble House was much more; it was a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport's subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. Enjoy a wonderful luncheon in Newport. After lunch we will tour The Elms. The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside Paris. Take some time to shop in downtown and grab a bite for dinner on own. La Salette Shrine-Festival of Lights. Tonight you will be dazzled by more than 300,000 lights on display during Christmas Festival of Lights where you will have the opportunity to come and enjoy a spectacular display of concerts and other events during the Christmas Season. Breakfast included at hotel. Check out and board the coach. Enjoy a self guided tour of the Breakers. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotal development in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century. Enjoy dinner tonight in Providence. Followed by A Christmas Carol, celebrate the magic and wonder of the holiday season with this beloved New England Holiday tradition! The tony award winning Trinity Repertory Theater presents its signature show which is reinvented every season. Appealing to young and old alike, this timeless tale of the power of forgiveness is a welcome reminder of the magic the holidays bring.
